question about eliminating a staircase
I would appreciate it if I could find out whether it is possible to do the following:
Building A and Building B are contiguous to each other. Each has 4 floors and each has approx. 900SF floor through apartments on each floor. Currently each building has its own entrance and stairs to the right of the building.
My question is:
1. Is it possible to eliminate the entrance and staircase of Building A and use the entrance and staircase of Building B to access the apartments in both buildings? The usable entrance and staircase (staircase of Building B) is in the middle of two building. The stairs would directly access the apartments in Building A and in Building B without passing any major hallways.
2. If it is possible to use one entrance and set of stairs for both buildings, would it be allowed to include the space from the stairwell of Building A to add it to the units in Building A.
These buildings are in Manhattan. Zoning is R7B.

This is an extremely serious life safety issue and can't be answered causally on a forum.
You need to hire an architect licensed in NY and who is familiar with the NYC ordinances.
Otherwise, highly unlikely, as you probably have exit travel distances that need to be maintained.
