Masters in the Art and Craft of Building

Postby djswan » Sun Jan 13, 2008 2:33 pm

I got asked the other day, who my favorite current architect was and why? I think the questionair was guessing I was going to say nobody and give reasons why not. Probally writing a paper or something.

My reply was: Jack Sobon is a master, I know he is an architect.
I left it at that.

I like Jack. Cool guy. Never met him personnally, but we have some friends in common and I own a couple of his books.

I'm sure there is some other Masters of Building, in other places around the world some of ya'll know, and might enlighten me with what they do and did to master it.

Jack is also a timberframer

Thanks for the help

As far as I know, the definition of architect, is "master builder".

But then again, of course, not all architects are "master builders".

And then there are, again, some who propose to be "mb's" (is that master of business or master builder? ha) and believe they are the superior race, and the architect and designer weasels must bow in respect to their superior knowledge of the crafts..... and the superior "structural truth" of their "innovative" systems.

And then there are the simple humble craftsmen, minding their own business, in an unpretentious way, not supposing to be something they are not. They are the true nice guys. They are the true heroes, the ones who seek the ultimate truth in structural knowledge..... hats off to you my friend.... :)

Dang, that was well said. The truth is hard to find. I have a distaste for business folks, it encourages bad behavior. $$$

Where did you read the definition of architect as "master builder"? Isn't that definition at least 150 years out of date?

My Collins English Dictionary defines an architect as a "person qualified to design and supervise the construction of buildings", which IMO is a bit limiting because we also tend to be involved with everything from interior design to city planning.

Go ahead and have another pop at architects if you want, but I'm just curious where you obtained your definition from.

OK, one more pop. 150 years sounds about right. That's a long time to inbreed. What you get from that inbreeding is: a person qualified to design and supervise the construction of buildings.

90/10

Still looking, thanks for the input.

This is freakin ridiculous............. blaming architects for the state of architecture is like blaming doctors for the state of medicine.

If you're honest, you would have to admit that it takes everyone......... architects, contractors/builders, and clients......

all working diligently together.........

to f*ck things up.

Interesting link djswan, big-up to all our skilled craftsmen and women in Middle England!

I shouldn't worry birgco, it just shows that there are too many bitter and sarcastic builders/residential designers here with plenty of spare time to spend taunting on the web

Or should I say there are far too few architects here, 'cause they are probably busy working their butts off designing and supervising the construction of our built environment....

My first dedication is to education. Good karma comes back.

So now, more of you know about the CF. I hope you join.

Doctors of take an oath. so do lawyers. I don't blame them for the state of architecture on this planet.

Architects lead. or has the profession fallen that far?

I still don't know what they are professing to.

A hairdresser married a mechanic; their baby grew up to be an architect.

I was going to be a United States Marine Corps officer. and then dad got sick. Built my first house with him. twenty some years ago.

I have met many architects. Most "working" get money from Mom and Dad and spend it on telling everyone how good they are at architecting.

It's a fall back profession to many, and the good ones get pushed back. Or so I say. Money matters in this profession. or so I'm told.

Where's the Masters?
