Augmented Reality

Apple has developed an ARKit for developing iOS apps. Basically, it looks out at the world it sees through the camera and constructs a 3D model of the surfaces it recognizes and then the user can do thing to that model in their app.

There are now a couple apps that use this for measuring a room and creating a floor plan. There is CamToPlan Pro and Measure 3D Pro. They talk of 3% accuracy. CamToPlan is $8.

They are compatible with the iPad Pro and some iPhones, but the idea of drawing accurately with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Do a Google search for these apps and you can see demo videos of them in action.

It’s not available on the MacOS yet, but I’m sure we will see this at some point in the future.
