DWG to PCADD
DWG to PCADD
I'm using latest PC & WT (as far as I know) on an intel MacBook Pro with 4 GB of RAM. I received a DWG file from another engineer to do some work on. The file is 500 kB.
When I try to open it in PC it freezes every time. I don't get to the first window, no chance to change any options. I sent it to ESW yesterday, but haven't heard anything back.
Does anyone have any up-to-date suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff H

Re: DWG to PCADD
Download the free software DRAFTSIGHT, open the file with it, clean the file if necessary then save as and open it with powercadd

ftribel,
Wowser! (A useful term I learned from my daughter.) That (Draftsight) worked perfectly as far as I can see now. I'm not sure what you meant by cleaning the file, but it opened right up in PC after saving.
Thanks very much,
JeffH

Re: DWG to PCADD
Well, I guess I spoke too soon. Draftsight opened the DWG file fine. I was able to save it as new DWG file without difficulty. The new DWG file opened as expected in the PC translator. But I was only able to save model space components as a PC file. The complete drawing continues to crash PC.
I still don't know what is the matter. I tried saving as an older DWG format without help.
Again, andy suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: DWG to PCADD
I noticed something like this too. I made a version 2000 DWG from GIS data in Adobe Illustrator (originally printed to a PDF from the GIS software). The file was fairly large, like 50MB, and it would crash PowerCADD 8. However, it would open just fine in PowerCADD 6. I audited the DWG file in AutoCAD 2012 and it didn't find any errors or other problems. I must admit I'm a bit puzzled and disappointed.

In addition to looking at the crash logs, you can also have the Console window open and you can often find things written out that can give you a clue as to what is going wrong.

Re: DWG to PCADD
I found that correcting some of the text problem while in Draftsight enabled me to open the DWG with little trouble.
Also, Draftsight enables me to save the DWG to a format that is earlier than 2010. That further helps matters.

DWG to PCADD
when i export from rhino to dwg, in 4 or 5, my blocks lose their link between instances. I thought it was possible to keep this intact. Can anyone help?
