Kampung Cina is a microcosm of Chinese settlement along the fringes of the Terengganu River, which houses more than 200 ancestral home dating back to more than three centuries. In 2009, the Double Frontage Project which involved the reclamation of land to pave way for an esplanade, namely Pulau Warisan, has resulted in rising concerns by the residents as well as the grappling concern of the unregulated frontage toward the Esplanade. To contribute to the discourse on this changing urban condition, Koperasi Kampung Cina Kuala Terengganu Berhad initiated effort for the revitalization of the Kampung Cina Esplanade.
As part of this effort, Koperasi Kampung Cina Kuala Terengganu Berhad in collaboration with Center for Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia (MASSA) School of Architecture, Building and Design (SABD), Taylor's University Lakeside Campus in Malaysia is organizing a design workshop.
The workshop aims to generate sensitive, creative and relevant design strategies towards the revitalization of the Kampung Cina Esplanade through the disciplines of architecture, art and design.
MASSA organizes a working structure for the workshop which will group around 50 student participants and professionals/academics into 5 units. Each unit, headed by selected prominent design professionals, is expected to work independently and to produce creative ideas and ideal solutions for Kampung Cina.
• To map the problems and issues pertaining to the unregulated building facades facing the Esplanade.
• To have discourses and dialogues amongst professionals, conservationists, students, local governors, residents and other stakeholders in coming up with the most ideal solution for revitalization.
• To let participants experience the site and work in-situ in putting forward their ideas for the revitalization project.
• To generate various ideas and perspective for the project, and providing the autonomy to the committee to select elements from these proposals to be implemented in the revitalization project.
For five (5) days, 26-30 Sept 2012, there will be intensive dialogue and discourse with professionals, conservationists, students, local governors, residents and other stakeholders in the series of lectures, discussions, and presentations as well as in-situ observation and engagement.
