Hi there,
I recently purchased my first condo and need some help with the floor plan. There is a fireplace in one of the corners of the living room and am trying to figure out where to place the TV. If I put it on the other side i would be putting all the furniture away from the fireplace. There is a possiblity of putting it next to the fireplace, however I think it might be too much. The other wall has a sliding door to the balcony.
Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Design your space to meet the reality of your life. If that reality is that you watch TV and look at the fireplace a lot, and you need to put them next to each other to make sense of the room, then do it.
The design problem from there is figuring our how to make the arrangement aesthetically appealing. A lot of folks these days hang a flat panel TV over the f.p. Some build the TV and f.p. into a large wall with a single finish that unifies them as one element. Occasionally I've seen folks put the TV IN the fireplace. Heck, if you don't use the f.p., this seems as good and as honest an idea as any. |

I feel your pain.
Consider moving the TV to another room all together.
Nothing says the tV must go into the living room.
A media room maybe. |

| One other idea that can work really well if the room is large enough: Create 2 different sitting areas. Put the TV on the opposite side of the room and face the sofa and loveseat toward it. Then put one or two smaller chairs in front of the fireplace as an intimate sitting/reading/conversation space. |

| Consider using swivel armchairs that pivot. |

Hi Matt,
Go big flat panel for the TV, then mount it on a swing-out arm so it can be viewed next to the fireplace, in front of the fireplace, hidden by a drape or hinged painting/poster, and tilted to avoid unwanted light interference from your picture window, fire, lamps, or the brilliance of your smile when you realise that your living area adjusts to suit your mood. Another option is videoprojection, but flat panel is ergonomic and ecologically friendlier. _________________ Larry Niven said, "Think of it as evolution in action" (Oath of Fealty).
