Hello everyone,
I am writing to you all because I was hoping you guys could help me answer some questions. My 16yr sister is going to be a Senior next year and she has always wanted to become an architect. She would like to start looking into schools, decide on a major and find out what specialty if any she wants to do. But she doesn't know where to start. Being her older sister I figured I do some research to help her and ended up here. You all seem to know your stuff so I figured it wouldn't hurt to get your opinion.
I guess my first question is which are the top architectural schools in the country(USA)?
What kind of degree would she need? BA, MA? Does she have to be certified by some board?
What would be her major? I think its architecture but does it get more specialized?
And lastly what are the different kinds of specialization if any?
I really appreciate any help and insight you can provide. And if there is any other information that you deem helpful please feel free to add.
Thanks,
Rose |

Hi Rose,
If you scroll further down, you'll find a couple threads on architecture schools (best arch. school and Schools in North America are decent threads). While rankings can give some direction, their usefulness is limited, especially on design schools.
As for degrees, a person needs a professional degree to practice. It can be a bachelor's or master's depending on the school. There will be specializations in the curriculum, but she'll need to look at each school on an individual basis for that.
ArchRec has a Guide to Architectural Education that should provide you with a starting point.
Lastly, since your sister is still somewhat undecided on her major, it might be better to go to a university that offers many majors and a diverse population of individuals vs. a specialized art/architecture school. |
