Hello to all out there,
I'm interested in pursuing a career in architecture, but I'm worried about the practical aspects of finding a good paying as well as satisfying job. I am interested if anyone knows what an average salary is for someone with a masters in architecture (if it's higher than for a bachelors degree). I am also interested, in general, what it takes (years, work, time) to be able to design your own buildings. And, can I be a main designer of a building without being the head of the company? I've also heard rummors that those who design the cool buildings don't get paid as well. Is this true, and if it is, why is it this way, and what types of firms pay better (as in larger, etc.)? Not to sound too materialistic .
A little bit about my background... I am now graduating from college with two degrees. One is in mechanical engineering, the other is in industrial design and fine arts. I've never been able to chose between the two, and it seems that architecture is the perfect combination. I know I love designing spaces, but I feel that I'm bound to become a computer monkey for about ten years before I can do anything creative. Am I wrong? And, does my background in engineering (I also have work experience - 4 internships) help substantially in finding a better job?
I have to decide between pursuing a masters of architecture degree starting this summer, or taking a very-well paid job with an engineering firm. My decission is contingent upon the answers to these questions and I would really appreciate some advice from architects in the field, if anyone is out there. Thank you!
