Hi all!
I have several years of pro experience in using 3StudioMAX. However, that was a few years back and now I need a tool with this spec:
x Rudimentary 3D modelling and animation capability
x Ability to produce a piece of software with some interaction, typically: mouse click in one part of screen picture->one animation plays
mouse click in other part of picture->play another animation
x As cheap as possible, I´m on a shoestring budget
x Possible to run on a "small" system, i e Win 98SE.

Take a look at DesignWorkshop Professional.
It's an easy to use, simple 3D modeling, rendering and animation tool that works with Windows 98 (as well as Win 95/NT4/ME/2000/XP) and with Macintosh. It seems like DW would more than meet your needs. And it's reasonably priced!

Dear David,
I have downloaded the DW Lite (freeware) edition and modelingwise it´s about what I expected, i e excellent value for money  .
Just one little problem: As far as I can see no animation capability - is this correct, or is there something I´m missing? It is possible to interactively move within the model, but that´s not quite what I´m looking for.

Because it's our basic, no-frills evaluation edition, DesignWorkshop Lite doesn't include things like scripted walkthrough animations, high-quality rendering, and other higher end features.
As you noted, all of the DesignWorkshop products do include a real-time walkthrough mode.
So, you could create an animation using DW Lite by exporting each frame manually as you walk through the model (eg, moving around with the arrow keys). Of course, that's tedious and you'd need a program that could convert a batch of still frames into a single movie file.
For better, more convenient results, you might consider DesignWorkshop Professional. DW Pro includes a scripted walkthrough feature that produces a QuickTime movie file, generated automatically from a sequence of saved views, with path interpolation and frame rate control.
