| The Times of India indicates that a number of original tribes inhabiting the Andaman & Nicobar Islands belonging to India are not traceable. The population of each tribe was no more than a few hundred or less, and they were averse to contact with modern civilization. Indian anthropological authorities had made efforts in the past to ensure that their worldview and lifestyle was not affected by regulating, and in some cases, prohibiting contact with the tribes. The regions they inhabited were off-limits to non-residents and tourists. I think this is one of the biggest losses to humankind, besides the loss of other lives and property. Nature has its ways, I guess. |

What a shame -- so much loss. It is reported that rescuers are finding no dead animals (though I saw a picture with a dead cow -- don't know where) -- perhaps it's true that they were able to anticipate the event. One early report included mention of a high-pitched sound, followed by a roar, before the waves struck.
Perhaps our correspondents from the region will enlighten us. The tragedy of lack of forewarning, which should have been possible, will now be taken up seriously, we hope.
Condolences to any and all who may have suffered by this event.

Here is an excerpt from an article about the tsunami. Quote from an Indian undertaker.
"We don't have enough coffins and those that we have are too small for the bloated bodies of foreigners."
We in the west are so fat they cant even bury us. |
