Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,

ArchWeek Green, from the editors of the leading architecture magazine online, brings you weekly sustainable design and building news from around our planet.

Many of us have a big smile around the passage of the Waxman-Markey energy and climate bill through the U.S. House of Representatives. Phew. Finally. On to the Senate!

And at the same time as the bill is a big, vital step in the right direction, we know that its provisions fall far short of what's actually needed from the U.S. in order to get global greenhouse gas levels back below 350 ppm CO2 equivalent in a safe time frame.

For those us experiencing some such blend of satisfaction and concern, Paul Krugman, as usual, offers a bracing perpendicular perspective. I, for one, am glad someone with the pulpit to say such things has the guts to go with it:

Paul Krugman wrote:
So the House passed the Waxman-Markey climate-change bill. In political terms, it was a remarkable achievement.

But 212 representatives voted no. A handful of these no votes came from representatives who considered the bill too weak, but most rejected the bill because they rejected the whole notion that we have to do something about greenhouse gases.

And as I watched the deniers make their arguments, I couldn't help thinking that I was watching a form of treason -- treason against the planet.

To fully appreciate the irresponsibility and immorality of climate-change denial, you need to know about the grim turn taken by the latest climate research.

Betraying the Planet, by Paul Krguman - New York Times, 2009.0629

Do you think we've reached the point where climate change denial is tantamount to "treason against the planet"?

It's important to "get things right" when a new building is
constructed. More so than perhaps anything else we create, new
buildings will be with us for a very long time.

The greenhouse gas cap-and-trade section of the Waxman-Markey
climate and energy bill gets most of the attention, as it should,
but the bill has many other provisions, some of which are
directly important to the building industry.

At first glance, the glossy new 35-story condominium tower
slicing into the lower Manhattan skyline doesn't stand out as a
beacon of sustainable design. Its sleek form -- an extruded
curving wedge accented with red terra cotta bands -- looks more
Ferrari than Prius. And the structure's granite base and
travertine lobby walls are elements not usually associated with
green building.

Why is that? This is the normal update post put out by DC on a weekly basis.

For me treason is a strong word that implies very serious penalties. There are a lot of political and religious zealots in this world who can only see their cause and will always believe they are right regardless of any scientific information.

I may find many derogatory words to describe these people but treason would not be one of those. The planet will do fine one way or the other. It is not dependent on us and has been through much worse. Perhaps this is a normal part of evolution?

The prognosis for people on the other hand does not look particularly pleasant. I am not sure that climate change will be the worse factor among many though. It looks like a virus may eventually escape the bonds of modern medicine and with our current overpopulated and global community will most likely be quite devastating.

I say we are over populated because up until the intense use of fossil fuels and modern medicine the human population seemed to stay at a fairly stable density. Or capability to reproduce could have resulted in a population of trillions over the last 30,000 years but nature kept us in balance. We are so dependent on oil and it is running out so fast that we should all be nervous about what the consequences of that will be. Furthermore I don't think it is out of the question that we could still manage to nuke ourselves into oblivion at some point.

I would submit that all the species of Earth are genetically programmed to dominate and humans are simply following that imperative. It would be nice to believe that our brains allow us to escape this innate behavior but I don't think we are there yet.

We know that the temperature of the Earth has been quite a bit higher in the far distant past and it was in that period that much of the fossil fuels we now consume so rapidly where created. I don't think it is out of the question that this is a natural cyclical event regardless of the fact that we are helping it along.

Personally I recommend caution and prudence. We would do good to pay attention to the realities we are facing and prepare for them. We should reduce our use of fossil fuels by 80% for no other reason than they are a limited resource that we may well continue to need in the next thousands of years. I don't believe that we have the innate right to consume all that we can and leave the future with nothing but dirt. Technology may well eliminate the need for these fossil fuels in the future but until that happens we should use them conservatively.

We should realize that the Earth does not naturally except the current human density. It is simply a construct of our modern technology and will likely backfire on us at some point unless we control ourselves. Nature, as far as I can tell, likes diversity and our domination is excluding diversity these two facts seem to be at odds with each other.

Many people have been lead to believe that hyper consumption is the only way to achieve a high standard of living. I believe this is a myth and somehow we will need to show that we can be conservative and also prosper.
