May I know how the bidding process is conducted in the States for a private project? Bids open publicly or only to invited guests? Thanks in advance.

In the tradtional Design/Bid/Build sequence, a bid opening is quite normal. Most are open to all those intersted, but are not, for priavte work, necessarily advertised. Most contractors/bidders appreciate the opprtunity to heard all of the bids, so they know how they fared, and who bid above or below them. That is good historical information for the contractors.

So I guess the answer to your question is that most are "openly private".
