Dear Designers, Builders, and Friends,
ArchWeek Green, from the editors of the leading architecture magazine online, brings you weekly sustainable design and building news from around our planet.
This week we ask, with the expert help of ArchiectureWeek correspondent Christine MacDonald, "What would you call a green building standard that, on balance, tends to interfere with environmental reform more than help?
| Quote: | Michael Luzier, president of the NAHB Research Center, a subsidiary of the homebuilders trade association, says his organization was responding to concern among homebuilders that LEED was gaining too much momentum.
"It was creating cachet at the legislative level. Builders felt it wasn't fair" that they hadn't had more of a say in developing the LEED standard, Luzier says.
But for Jason Grant, an architect and green building consultant in Sebastopol, California, and others who have spent years cultivating in the blossoming green building market, the NAHB's "green" forays are part of a wider effort by mainstream builders to confuse consumers and co-opt the movement. |

RedEye ARC produces 3D scaled replica models of residential and
commercial buildings. Fused deposition modeling(R) technology
offers time and cost savings over traditional modeling methods.
The plastic models are accurate, durable, and interactive,
allowing clients to remove floors to view each interior floor
plan and its features. Because the models are built from the
bottom up, details such as stone, tile, appliances, and fixtures
are possible, helping architects to easily communicate designs
to their clients.

this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, 50 large trees
every week, or 2500 trees (around a dozen acres of mature
conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting 120,000 weekly newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities, including:
