hi its me esha.
m a 5th yr architecture student trying to pick up " club building for old age people of the society as my thesis topic. what do u think about my topic ? . please help me. A quick reply will be higly appreciated. thanx

You have good social sentiments of course, but again this is not really an architectural thesis.
Maybe you need to use your project to explore how architectural elements work best for 'the elderly' (if it is possible to stereotype such a general social group). I remember Herman Hertzberger, the Dutch architect, explored options for designing old peoples residential care homes, creating a sense of community but at the same time giving each person their own private space for their possessions and memories. |

I see where your going with this, but I think you should try to incorporate some ideas as to how you can make the eldery more comfortable at the club. The eldery don't do much because they are old and most of them can't do anything but something they do need is something to help them move around and take away any physical stress on the body. it would be cool to have chess tables, checkers, reading areas, some tv, a garden for relaxation in a very architectural design maybe depending the area.

Lekizz, can u please further elaborate as why u think it is not appropriate for an architectural thesis?? I guess it provides good opportunity to understand the psyche of the older people, and then designing for them would be interesting. I had some ideas similar to Mrartistboy and was thinking ways as to provide the best possible environment to them- one which they can’t really find at their homes (remember its just a club where they spent few hours of the day). Probably a pick and drop facility would be more helpful for them. |

Your view, that "old ppl r da most neglected ones. no body cares about their activities, what they wish to do. they are always left back at homes, feeling lonely with no one having time for them" is a social problem (and I'm sure genuine), not an architectural one.
Having studied architecture for five years (not psychology or sociology or politics) you need to put forward an architectural proposition. A 'Day Centre for the Elderly' is not a thesis, it is a building. A thesis is an idea or proposition which you set out to explore, prove or disprove, via architectural design. Certainly you may arrive at your thesis by observing or studying the activities of elderly people. Maybe, for example, you will decide that architecture can create a sense of community that the elderly lack. Or maybe you will propose that architecture can be a place to evoke memory in people's latter years. etc etc.
Don't worry, this forum is littered with students who think a building type is a thesis. I'm glad you came back and responded to our comments, thankyou! |

I think esha meant something like a recreational center, serving functions for the recreational needs of the elderly, not actually a Day Center for the Old People.
