Hi, I'm a new architecture student. I wonder why we need to study architecture history. Can somebody kindly explain how important it is to a architecture student?
Thanks... |

The study of architectural history is perhaps the most important general knowledge you need to develop your own style, and chose the field in which you will practice the art and mechanics of architectural design.
You will learn how the Greeks came upon the classical proportions of their temples and public buildings, how the Romans developed the self supporting brick structures for their aqueducts and concrete for their cathedrals and palaces, and used natural ways (green) to airconditioned their residences before the advent of mechanical systems, how the Egiptians developed mechanical means to transport and erect enormous buildings.
How in modern architecture the use of steel came to be the way to build tall buildings and self supporting bridges.
How the native people of the jungles used bamboo and straw to build their housing.
Knowing architectural history will help you avoid the mistakes architects make because they did not research the history of style and mechanics already used in other projects. |

| Exactly. We will get nowhere unless we understand past mistakes and successes. It is a common mistake of architecture students to think they need to reinvent things from scratch. |

| It's so important cause it makes you well rounded with the knowledge of architecture. you have to be able to understand how the styles came to be and it helps you integrate different ideas into your design and is inspirational. I feel as though before taking history of architecture I only wanted to do residential, then I learned how much more there was to architecture and learned about different styles. To really understand something, you have to understand all aspects. |
