| Yes, I would not hire an architect who couldn't draw. |

| Somewhat, I would prefer if an architect could draw, but I would still be willing to work with him/her. |

| Somewhat not, drawing would only become an issue if something was wrong with the computer rendered drawing. |

| No, as long as an architect can deliver me a building, I don't care if s/he can draw. |

[quote="innova+e"] | Quote: | | I wonder how well Prince Charles draws... I didnt think you could be a king without a crown. As a "westerner" the concept comes off as less than fairytale. perhaps his father has the answer to this one, and the heat might then be taken off us archs. and our drawing abilité! |
He does rather mediocre watercolours. So he has some idea of what goes into a drawing and what one can get out of drawing, even if he's no Leonardo.
Thing is, many sketches produced by architects are actually constructed, graphically-speaking, to impress other architects rather than to communicate with clients... |

With all the sarcasm I can gather:
If an architect can’t draw, he/she will have to give me all his/her instructions to delineate a job orally as in dictation, thus, agreeing that
“a picture is worth 10,000 words” the equation will be
X = 10,000words X 1,000,000.00 details X 5,785 points for a soprano's voice - 56,988 points for a tenor’s voice : 365,876.978 points for preliminary corrections + √532,888,891 = preliminary drawings for a one car garage |

| I just had to drop in on this one....it never occurred to me that anyone would consider architecture as a career if they could not draw. But I think the answer is yes. I think sculptors would have a good shot at it. |

| But sculptors, and muralists, always sketch before doing their work. |

Anyway, what does 'good at drawing' actually mean? Instant thumbnail perspectives? Deliberately drunken, abstract doodles like those of Co-op Himmeblau? A plan configuration? A near perfect circle? Something that could be mistaken for something by Michelangelo? Something with a nice tree and a five-year-old holding a balloon in it?

Communication by graphic means is a crucial part of practicing architecture, what is interpreted by the viewer(s) may not be what was intended by the drawer. Hence additional communication via 3-d models, more drawings, simulacra studies, visits to spaces that convey the designers intent, along with the long verbal discussions...
Great question though, and a tangent to ponder...
Does an artist lose credibility if they cannot paint?
Mr. Putin of Russia just got famous in the art world with a simple (my opinion) painting that someone wanted to pay a million dollas for!!! _________________ "If the city is one of humankinds greatest achievements, it's uncontrolled evolution also can lead to desecration of both nature and the human spirit" -M.G. The premise of the poll is kind of odd for a forum presumably haunted mostly by architects? It's as if it were a poll to be taken by someone wanting to hire an architect? Do they really hang out here?
Anyway, it seems kind of moot when it's hard to see how you can make it through architecture school without coming out at the other end without at least a passable ability to draw, at least in comparison to your average layman? _________________ Bryce Engstrom:Architect, A.I.A., General Building Contractor, LEED AP
