HI,

The building is around 30 stories. Based on my research, some building have exhaust vent in the core area, some dont'. There is a theory these days which saying the sprinkler system in the elevator lobby( plue fire curtain) is enough to control the fire spreading. The mechanically controled smoke exhaust ventilation won't do any good if the sprinkler is working already.

As you said, there is no code requirements for smoke exhaust ventilation in the highrise elevator lobby. But if you design this building, will you put an exhaust vent in the core for the double security besides the sprinkler system?

To answer y'r question:

No need to press. a main lobby. (but elevator should have alternet floor if a fire in the lobby - usually the 2nd floor) so if there is a fire in the lobby the elevator will go to another floor...or they will burn to death when the elevator goes on automatic and goes to Lobby level. (Ensure the electrical indicate this).

But to understand that sprinklers deal with "Fire".

Smoke is something different, smoke will kill you way before any fire will, so the idea is to insert outside air into an area/stair to provide pressurized air to ensure no smoke will fill the exit way for people to run for th'r lives Very Happy

In general for pressurizing: (per Canada codes)

All below grade stairs. (and no Fan in the stairwell) and c/w 2HR rated enclosure assembly c/w 2HR Rated Access Hatch. (don't forget the relief duct and b.d.d.).

Any "Link" between 2 developemnts/building need it (often missed)

Stair Above Grade are not required (but have done many, the owner has asked for it, and in the Condo documents). Realy just makes common sence to do.

The Elevator Shaft (the firefighters) needs also.

That's in a nut shell....but as always get y'r self a Code Consultant to verify and help establish these requirements early, because the costs of a missed item to pressurized is very expensive due to 2hr requirments.

Hope it helps Very Happy

You also need to pressurise the elevator lobbies "below grade" when 2 buildings are connected/linked. But not when it's only one building.
