Forgive me if this has been talked about before. I have tried seaching here and didn't see it so I thought I would ask if those with experience working with LEED can tell me if they can imagine a situation where selection of AV equipment could have an impact on a LEEDS rating score.
I have come to the conclusion that AV equipment will not be a significant factor, but I would love for someone to show me I am wrong.
I have browsed through the point structures in LEED Rating Systems for New Construction, Existing Buildings, Schools, Commercial Interiors and Retail. In all these rating systems, lighting and HVAC are addressed as the predominate sources of energy use within the facility.
For schools, points may be earned for passive acoustics that reduce background noise and improve sound transmission.
Retail includes points for using Energy Star products (which do not include Commercial AV) and Non-Food Service/Grocery retail spaces can earn 1-7 points if an energy savings outside of regulated energy uses (Lighting and HVAC) can be demonstrated to be between 10.5 to 31.5% of the total energy usage (including lighting and HVAC),
Each rating system includes a couple of points for innovation where a case for a super efficient AV system might be argued, but assuming there is a substantial improvement in energy efficiency, it likely wouldn't be more than a drop in the bucket when compared to the lighting and HVAC loads. Am I missing any major considerations? |
