I am installing new kitchen cabinets on a wall that was constructed with metal studs. I am a very detailed type person (aka - forum abuse -) and require a perfect job. I am very concerned about properly securing the cabinets to a wall system of this nature. You cannot develop very much clamping force (tensile) with a screw that is using the flange on a metal stud. Vertical loading (shear) is also a concern. What is the best way to install cabinets on a wall system of this type?

Hi Bruce,

I don't know if this is the best way, but this is what I would do. I would rip out the sheet rock and install 3/4" plywood to the metal studs. This would also give you an opportunity to reinsulate the exterior walls if needed, check the electrical wiring and any exposed plumbing. Depending on how many cabinets are covering the wall, you may not need to install sheetrock over the plywood especially is you use a finish grade plywood that can be painted. If you really want to get crazy, install 2x6 cats at the cabinet screw in height behind the plywood, in-between the metal studs. Guarantee they will never come off the wall. Good luck.

birgco describes an excellent system for this problem. However, I have installed cabinets to steel-stud walls with the appropriate screws with perfect success. I have sat upon low-hung wall cabinets that I installed this way without moving them. The studs that supported these cabinets required pre-boring, as the sharpened-tip screws would not always penetrate the studs. The job was a commercial space. I did not get to see the studs exposed but I presume they were the heavier gauge ones. If you can determine that the studs in your walls are of heavy gauge I wouldn't worry. Otherwise you might as well follow birgco's advice.
