Google SketchUp, it's free and it's easy.

Rhinoceros
i don't think you will get the construction document accuracy you will need from SU. and you could do it all in one package

Sure you can, users do it all the time. I can draw in 1/64" precision with SU. No framer on earth will ever measure that accurate

Well it sounds like you need a 2D drafting program, correct? So many options and choices. Are you on a PC or Mac? What is your budget?

Hi,
I'd like something that will do 3D so I can do elevations as well as plans. And rendering in 3D perspective too.
I'm on a PC.
My budget for this is virtually unlimited. I would like something that doesn't take months to learn how to use though.

Well for that have a look at Chief Architect
http://www.chiefarchitect.com/
They have a trial version that you can download and try. I'd say AutoCAD Architectural but it is way overkill for what you want. The full version sells for around $2,100 so it's not too bad in price. Good luck

OK. Thanks. I'll check it out.
BTW, if I start a drawing in one program trial and then decide to try or buy another, can I keep what I've done so far? i.e. can I save the drawing in .dwg or something and continue with it rather than starting all over?

Not sure about that. Each program will draw and act differently. CA (link above) seems to be a BIM (building information model system) adn not a CAD program so I doubt it will work that way

intellicad(s) 16+ fully dwg/dgn compatible acad clone+
autocad ... nuff said 'industry standard'
Rhinoceros , all formats compatible most easy to learn covers a wide area of diciplines , no limitations and 150$ for students for full commercial license
those are the 3 i would choose between.
