We're looking into the feasability of a river-source geothermal system for one of our projects. The word I'm getting is that people have heard of it being done before, and that it's possible but certain considerations for debris and securing the coils must be accounted for. The problem is I can't find anyone (architect, contractor, or manufacturer) who actually has experience putting these in place!

If you have any experience with open or preferably closed loop geothermal systems installed in a navigable river please let me know! Also helpful would be contact info for any contractor or geothermal systems designer with the same experience.

Thanks!

joel, this may lead you to some sources, hope it helps. There is an article in the bloomberg news service (search bloomberg news) about companies generating electricity from river turbines. One company is Verdant Power LLC. They have govt. permits to place turbines in the bottom of the east river in nyc and have been producing electricity but not commercially. It isn't geothermal, but they may be able to steer you to companies with the river technology or someone who can adapt the existing know-how. The reporter who wrote the article can be contacted : aeffinger@bloomberg.net. I think he is based out of Oregon.
Good luck.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't think this will apply in the project I referenced, but we have another project where they were looking into just such a technology. I'll be sure to check out the link.

Thanks,

Joel
