Once I got color injet printing, I started using color for renovations/additons: Black=existing, Red=new, Blue dashed=demo, etc. Everyone from clients to builders to building officials loved these. It started with little projects on 8 1/2x11 and then grew to larger projects on 24"x36" sheets. When I thought I would have them printed by a service bureau, I found they wanted $10/s.f.! That meant each D size sheet would be $60! If the job had 12 sheets, and I need a set, the owner needs a set, and the contractor at least half a dozen sets, it just was outrageous.
I've cooled on the use of color. I don't use color in every sheet, and the ones that are in color are ledgible in B&W as well. Not everyone gets a color set as well.

That is about what we have found. We have a color 12 x 18 printer that we print some "half" size sets here in house, but contractors don't like to use the half size sets they want the 24 x 36. Occasionially we print a full size color set for the clien on our color plotter, but it is still expensive. I did a little research a couple of years ago when we got our color plotter and found that there was one company out there that made a high speed printer like the service bureaus use that printed in Black and Red. That would be helpful but not the same as full color. I guess we will have to wait til the printing catches up to the computers.

Part of the problem, as I see it, is that the high speed printers out there (like the OCE 9000 series) print only black-and-white. They can print grayscale, too, but I find that, if I'm able to print a color working drawing print, it's far more effective than a grayscale print.
Seems like the only large format printers out there that print high-speed color are inkjets. Their initial cost is expensive, their upkeep is expensive, and so the dream of a color print costing 30 cents a square foot remains that- at least for now.
