Has anyone had any experience with using 3D scanners to create 3D models? How effective is it?
I was looking at this new one from http://www.3d3solutions.com that looks to be reasonably priced. It seems to just require a standard projector and camera.
Most that I've seen are higher priced than I'm willing to experiment with. I've seen a lot of ads about this stuff lately than before. |

That's kinda what I'm doing.
Depends on what kinda models you are building.
Houses or buildings? Forget it.
Artwork? That's more like it.
I'd question the $1400.00 price tag.
I'm looking at one for $60,000.00.
It produces stl and vrml files.
The software to run the scanner costs $15,000.00 but you then can manipulate the stl file.
I didn't scour the website but in the tech tab it didn't call out any useful file info.
If you can't replicate the data or modified data....it's not much good on the CAM side...but it might be fine for other 3D stuff. |

| From the website info it looks like you can export it in to another program to get STL files out. |

A friend of mine just picked up a copy and this thing is pretty incredible for the price. We've been having a blast trying to scan everything under the sun.
The gallery shows some pretty reasonable scans, and being able to scan something like that drill and then use it as reference is awesome.
