Well I'm a 2nd year student interior design ... I do not know if that counts as well, but I'd take every idea exchange I can,so I'm obviously very intrested in your point of view.... I'm from Belgium,Europe.I don't have much knowledge yet so every interaction would welcome... but I leave that up to you

Well fresnoarctec , I presume from your profile that you are a practisng architect. What sort of work do you do? Do you have an independent offfice. Tell me what is the image of an architect in California.
As far as I can see , at least by the standards of all the movies go , architects are portarayed as very boring specimens of society wh is always losing out. I think the image portrayed by Holywood is totally wrong. _________________ Mini M Fowler

Dear Yemisi
Glad to hear from you. Nigeria is an interesting place. What exactly is the style of Architecture practised over there?
I used to have a friend from Nigeria, who had to run away during the coup
We in India practise a very eclectic style. How is to practice as an independendent Architect there?
Would definitely like to hear from you
Mini

Hello Mini,
Nigeria is quite an interesting place to be. We have the most extreems of any situation any nation can find herself; and this is much reflected on the Architectural style here.
Architectural pratice in Nigeria is quite an ellitist profession. This does not mean there are no quake pratice around.
There is no market segmentation as most firms takes up any briefs from any sector of the industry. The only brief diffrential is the cost.
I started pratice as an independent Architect in Lagos, Nigeria January 2003. Ealier, i had started taking private projects while on previous employment.
Stating a private practice here is very difficult. You have to gabble with the high cost of getting a befiting office in the high browl area of Ikoyi/ Victoria Island area. Internet connection cost is still relatively high.
I learnt that you guys from India do get quite a lot outsourced Architectural jobs from US. Is this very true?
You may contact me further by email.
Iam happy to hear from you.

Dear Yemisi
In India architects are high on the proffessional ladder scale. But the concept of design consultancy and actual construction is still a mix up here as most clients expect us to be on their beck and call everytime. But this is only in the case or residences as each person's house is the most important thing to them. I'm trying to siphon off houses from my plate as it's too tiresome and every client becomes a self trained architect by the end of the project. I'm concentrating on larger real estate housing and apartmetnt complexes etc.
I was also working for a very large office till I forced myself out and opened my own firm in Sept. 2003. It was getting too lethargic and stagnant in a very commercial and large firm. It's bound to happen as you get larger I suppose. But I would not want to make the same mistakes.
What kind of projects do you do? . Are you practising by yourself?
And yes in India the scope of outsoruced projects are large , but you need a contact in the U.S to carry it out initially .
We are also looking at the prospects of doing the same here.
I did send this be e-mail, but it came back?
So let's see
Regards
Mini M Fowler

Thank you a million times Mini. I regret my inability to respond to your last post. I was actually very busy on some domestic issues.
It's sheer coincedence that the format of Architectural practice is much the same in India as it is in Nigeria. We also share related experience in our previous employment. My previous office got so big and we started experiencing decline. I had to quite when it became obvious that things aren't going to return to nomalcy.
I pratice as an Architect and also as an Interior designer. I have handled a couple of Corporate offices interior projects, but most jobs i handled are interior of residential apartments.
My firm is Laguna Design Centre, Lagos. It's still a small firm. I have only managed to get few projects in Architectural design. Most of my designs are project managed by me.
My experiences handling these series of residential projects are just the same to yours. In Nigeria you'll need some high level contacts to get real estate housing and apartment project briefs. Iam not relenting however to break into this market segment.
Is it possible to get jobs easily in India? I hope i can learn from your experince in getting outsourced jobs from US.
Waiting for your responce.
NB: My email is yemisi@lagunadesignteam.com I regret the ealier mix-up.
Cheers

Hi:
I am an archtiect in the US. We are currently pursuing a project in Nigeria for one of the leading Banks. If we end-up getting it we may have to consider a resident architect and possible outsourcing. Please let me know your recommendations. Also, I appreciate if you can send me average per SF cost of buiding (5 star.) in the suburbs of Lagos.
Thanks,
Bo |

Hello Mini,
I am an architect in London. I started practicing by working for some of the large firms and was lucky enough to be involved in a lot of the amazing schemes taking shape both in the UK and overseas, especially the Middle east. But, in 2002 I made the decision to become an independent Architect and recently completed a 9 bedroom residence for an asian client in one of London's suburbs. Although, architecture still remains one of the core elements of my business, i have started to move into a slightly different direction.
I created www.podmedia.mobi which is a webcast platform dedicated to architecture, design and kinetic technologies. It is developed to work like a mainstream station. In terms of development there is still a long way to go but we are working on it. I am also, establishing a business development consultancy.
Starting a private practice in the UK is not that difficult if you know your way around the market. But the UK has stringent planning and building regulations and chasing planners can easily take a chunk out of your day and the juice out of the creative work you are supposed to be enjoying as an architect.
I worked with a lot of Indian architects previously and have learnt how robust the market is currently there. Is that right?
Look forward to hearing from you.
