Hi,
I'm VERY new to this forum and architecture (just starting). I really want to get a head start on my portfolio to make it extra good, but im wondering, what is expected in a "excellent" portfolio? I'm already working on a flash set up which is pretty nice, but what kind of content are people looking for when looking through it?

thanks Smile

what type of portfolio are you making? for a school? for a job? what level? it makes a difference

schools like to see that you have the ability to learn and have a process in your work, not just a final product

jobs like to see what you have achieved, all your bests

make it simple and easy to read, no one likes to be confused

Portfolios are hard work and starting one now is a good idea, but once you get into college and have to submit another for a class you should go back and revise it. Most college don't want to see your high school work after you have been in college for a year or so. you should include finished work as well as concept model that have been completed. You don't need to include everything, you should include only what you feel is best work if you can not decide ask someone to help you not your best friend they will normally not be completely honest with you because they may not want to hurt your feelings.

Thanks for the info Very Happy

Since im doing my portfolio in flash, I was wondering how much attention will they actually pay to the flash? Because though I'm only in highschool, I consider myself good with flash, because I done flash for many commercial businesses. Smile

So say I make a really fancy flash that looks cool and people will say "WOW! You made that!?" Will they look apon me better than if I made just a regular flash such as something that resembled a regular website?

As far as your flash skills are concearned, an architectural frm will not look at the flash as careful as they will your designs. Keep in mind that the presentation is an ideal consideration, but alot of flash is not good for the most part.

For instance, if you were trying to get a position at a well respected architectural firm with architects that have been around since the hand/paper days that still insist on using 56k modems, they will be not as intrested in what you can do with flash. They are looking for key results, not how many symbols that are contained within the .fla or .swf files.

Now say if you were looking to get a position as a graphic designer in the architectural firm with a cad background to help with overflow, then that may be appropriate, but alot of engineering firms do not house a specific graphic designer. A visualization specialist yes, but not a graphic designer.

I hope that this helps, just keep in mind that too much flashy "techno" designs that are really intense are not required for this field of work. When I was in the design process for my site/portfolio, I had about 3 different versions made up. I posted them and contacted a few people in the industry and asked their opinions. While my site may appear cheesy, it has a decent load time and very straight to the point and easily navigatable. Feel free to take a look.

hi jrog,
before making a portfolio first of all think who is going to look at ur port folio
if it is an architect he is least interestedin ur flach thing what he want is design
if ur design is good nobody can disapprove it
cause u r designing for people to stay who r not intrested in any presentation as far as they have a comfortable place to live in
in my whole carrier i made many presentation
not on comp. even
it was just dwg on black paper in white ink
but if u r sending ur folioto a graphics person thn he is nt interested in ur design thn u can do wht u wnt
but in architecture, beware there is only one motto tht is public satisfaction
