I don't think putting more colors and bigger fonts will do anything good. I think a slick, simple design is better than an over-worked one.

However I do agree that your menu needs more prominence, ...

Generally speakin I think any recent Nikon wide lense is a safe bet.
I also like the 24mm f/2.8

Totally agree, experience is the key (unfortunately for recent graduates)

Altough getting hired these days is going to be nearly impossible, whether you have experience or not...

Well 1200$ is not a huge budget

But if you get a good student deal, I would definitely go for a macbook pro!
