the very widely reported allegations that members of the US military desecrated the Holy Koran at Guantanamo, and possibly other locations, may have implications that go even wider than the offence caused to over a billion Muslims.
| Quote: | the crowd tore the Holy Ark wide open; and three men who had smashed the Ark, threw the Scrolls of the Law of Moses out. They threw them out - these Scrolls, which had stood in their quiet dignity, draped in blue or wine-red velvet, with their little crowns of silver covering the tops of the shafts by which the Scroll was held during the service - to the screaming and shouting mass of people who had filled the little synagogue.
The people caught the Scrolls as if they were amusing themselves with a ball-game - tossing them up in the air again, while other people flung them further back until they reached the street outside. Women tore away the red and blue velvet and everybody tried to snatch some of the silver adorning the Scrolls.
Naked and open, the Scrolls lay in the muddy autumn lane, children stepped on them and others tore pieces from the fine parchment on which the Law was written - the same Law which the people who tore it apart had, in vain, tried to absorb for a thousand years. |
- first hand account of the desecration and destruction of the small synagogue in the German village of Hoengen, on Kristallnacht - the Night of Broken Glass - in 1938, from the book Kristallnacht - Unleashing the Holocaust by Anthony Read and David Fisher. _________________ Richard Haut has worked with the architectural profession for over 25 years and produces the weekly Richard Haut's Competitions, which has given architects details of many thousands of projects for which they can apply across Britain and Europe. |

I mentioned that the allegations had been widely reported - they have been.
now check your facts. Newsweek have NOT withdrawn allegations that Americans desecrated the Koran. There are certain aspects of that story that they have said that they were not satisfied with - but NOT the desecrations.
however, the desecrations have been reported far more widely and with full witness reports. _________________ Richard Haut has worked with the architectural profession for over 25 years and produces the weekly Richard Haut's Competitions, which has given architects details of many thousands of projects for which they can apply across Britain and Europe. |

as far as i have been hearing, the worst part of the whole story... the urinating on the koran, was actually a mistake. turned out it was a prisoner who had tried to stop up the toilet by trying to flush koran pages down it...
i'll admit i'm not at all up to date on most news since i have only seen snippets between all the traveling around and guests and deadlines and junk i have had to deal with in the past few weeks... |

as is being repeatedly pointed out across various media, the desecration of the Koran is not itself the story - but the abuse. The idea that the Koran should be insulted while Muslims are degraded and abused hardly seems a surprise.
interesting to see George Galloway - British Member of Parliament - facing up to false accusations in the US Senate. Surely the Senate were aware that the faked up accusations had already been shown for what they were in a British court ? _________________ Richard Haut has worked with the architectural profession for over 25 years and produces the weekly Richard Haut's Competitions, which has given architects details of many thousands of projects for which they can apply across Britain and Europe. |

Mr Galloway is surely last week's hero, for standing up so brilliantly to the likes of Senator Coleman.
Americans were provided, briefly, with a contrast to the usual mealy-mouthed deference to American politicians, by other Americans.

Galloway has been under merciless attack in Britain for years - from politicians, newspapers and other media.
Mealy-mouthed just about sums up the British response as well.
I understand that the Cannes Film Festival held another unpleasant surprise for the Neo-Cons. The film the Power of Nightmares. Very different from Michael Morres irritating style - much more serious and, unfortunately for Bush, I hear that it is much more seriously put together.
Since the US TV networks are apparently too timid to show it, watch it at a cinema and then remember Lenins statement that the purpose of terrorism is to cause terror.
