i'm a post-graduate architecture student and i'm currently involved in researching floating islands, or mega vessels as we call them down here.
I was wondering what projects or proposals are out there for large marine structures that can accomodate approx. 2000 people and feature all sorts of luxurious leisure and entertainment facilities in addition to independent chalets, hotel rooms, casinos, theatre, etc.
if anyone has come across what i've mentioned above please notify me.

I would suggest that any research on floating cities should include the proposals presented by R. Buckminster Fuller in 1967. Fuller based his design on the tetrahedron. Check out the link and scroll down to section: 5.6 What was Fuller's ``floating city?''

Floating cities could be the answer to the dangers of tsunamis, hurricanes and typhoons. The floating city could be anchored far enough out that the wave surge of a tsunami would be negligible. When major storms threaten the city it could simply be moved to a location a few hundred miles away from the path of the storm.
Cities could be built with gardens covering part of the surface to provide a continual food source. Fish farms could be incorporated as a part of the structure. The roof could include helicopter landing pads.
The floating city could be built in a circular shape (or any other) to incorporate an interior harbor for small or large boats. The structure could be built of recyclable steel, concrete, or from Sea-crete (I think that term is already a trademark). Sea-crete could be made from accretion of minerals in the sea. If clams can make shells from sea water, why can't people make "City Shells." We simply need to perfect the technology for ding so.
If we can imagine it, we can build it! |
