A very short question for a very complex answer.
A building based on its shape and size can effect everything from the microclimate, landscape, vistas, and can even effect surrounding buildings. Not to mention how building placement can effect the building itself. Site planning is a very big issue and in the ARE and entire test is based on just that aspect of building.
Not sure what you were trying to find out with the question but I hope I have given you some direction and reality to the problem.
