We are thinking about using the Xref feature in PC6. I would like to hear experiences from the the forum members before we start using the feature.
For example:
Can we have one site plan base drawing xrefed to several different drawings at diferent scales?
Can portions of the site plan be used rather than all the entire thing?
What is the best method to store the detail sources?
Should we store the details on one computer or keep syncronized folders on all the computers?
Your help using this feature is appreciated. |

Yes. Setup the master site plan accordingly - things like the fact line weights and dashes don't scale can be an issue in the case of extreme scaling.

No: in that you cannot specify a 'window' or saved view to be x-ref'd
Yes: in that you can use sheet setups but management can be come difficult if you're not mindful of how to reference visible layers or don't follow some well thought out layer naming conventions

There is no best method. What types of details, what scale, what sheet size, different scales, and how are they being assembled for printing are just a few considerations that affect the approach to take.

Keeping the data on a central server is best. Syncing folders on a peer-to-peer network can work. What should be done is going to be relative to how the network is setup and the knowledge base of those administering the system
Sorry if some of those seem like non-answer answers. However, there are numerous permutations and combinations as to how Referencing could be used. The best advice is to setup some simple, non project related, test files. Then explore the various feature sets to see how they fit into your work flow

What kind of work are you doing? we are land planners and landscape architects. We appreciate the kind of drawing control that this feature gives us, and we like the fact that all work on a huge site is in a single drawing, which opens a new world of presentation and printing opportunities.
We use references on every project, even one-sheet projects, where the titles are referenced. There's a modest learning curve on using this feature and learning to think in terms of how sheets are set up, but it's well-worth the effort.
You might search the old forum as there was recently a thread on this subject in which I laid out the steps that we take to use references. I'll repeat them if you wish.
About the only problems that I find with references: the inability to use a window cut out of the reference [which we call the source]: this only means that when you reference you get the entire source, not just part of it [not really a problem except in some unique situations]; layer control is weak, but layer control is generally a soft spot in PowerCadd; on mounting it displays spurious and incorrect error dialogs; you can't click on a reference layer to find out what layer an object resides on the source.
Most of these are more irritating than anything else. In general, referencing is very robust and ready for prime time.
And now you can reference Photoshop and other non-Powercadd documents, a feature that we have been using with good results, although the origins-limitation is sometimes hard to workaround.
