Hello-
I have just graduated with a BFA in Photography and have a strong interest in architecture. I am thinking about getting a Masters in Architecture at another school. I am worried because i have not had the extensive education that an undergrad. in architecture has. I continue to educate myself, but i feel that their is only so much i can do. And architecture, having so many various aspects to it, i would need to learn a lot. Doing a Masters program which is 3 years and starting out from scratch is very intimidating. Based on any of your experiences, is it difficult for someone in my situation to do this. From one major to another? I asked an advisor and he said to not to do an undergrad. in arch. because i just did my undergrad. and that the next step is to do a Masters... Thanks for reading and your time! |

Hello sdabbs,
I'm not too sure where you are from, but i know here in Canada most of the Architecture Universities I believe will not allow this. I know for Waterloo University you MUST start as an undergraduate student no matter what you have a degree in. Although, in British Columbia and Manitoba, their universities allow a person with a degree in Environmental Studies to enter in the their Master's programs. However, in your case, i dont believe you can go right into a Masters. I believe this is common for all of Canada. The United States may be different. Your best bet would be to contact the Universities directly.
Hope this helps,
Matt |

Interesting that you have this interest, as I have my undergrad in Architecture (b-arch) and am interested in photography as a profession. From my experience in American universities, it is possible to gain admittance to a masters program without a specific undergrad in the architectural genre. You may have to take some extra ciricullum to go along with the masters track- but the school will walk you through that (such as basic structures and history courses that were covered in the undergrad.)
hope this is helpful- good luck.
