| My father and I are opening a restaurant & dancehall in western Kentucky. We purchased the building, which was pre-existing and had partially burnt, last fall. We are in a county which has no planning and zoning, so we thought we would have some leaway when it came to the design and structure, as it would not be inspected. We used Icynene spray foam insulation in the ceiling of this post frame building and left it exposed, coating it with dry fog, flat black paint. The reason was two-fold, to create a more roomy feeling, and also some great accoustics. Well, all was going great until!, the state showed up and wants us to put a 'Thermal Barrier' over it. We have no problem with trying to comply with code, however, the inspector seems to be stuck on this term thermal barrier. I have researched it and it appears to me that the new intumescent paints, that 'puff up' when exposed to heat, will suffice for a thermal barrier. The one I am looking at has a 30 min rating on wood, and since Icynene does not support combustion, it seems the rating would only increase. If anyone could offer any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. JC. |
