Digital Divide Data (www.DigitalDivideData.com), a non-profit organisation working to help disabled and disadvantaged young people in some of the poorest countries in the world would like to ask for a moment of your time to help with research on an architecture related project.
Currently we run data-entry operations in Cambodia and Laos, employing hundreds of landmine victims, women formerly sold into the sex trade and disabled young people for fair pay, short hours, subsidised education and healthcare. We have awards from among others, the UN and the British and American governments and have been featured on the BBC website ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3246924.stm )
As we expand, we are looking for ways to provide our staff with work more skilled and interesting than data entry. Training our operatives to redraw old architectural plans, originally done direct onto paper, using CAD is one idea we are investigating. As we are "offshore" and non-profit, we would only need to charge a few dollars an hour to provide for our employees and continue developing the organisation - meaning that we can cut costs for architects significantly.
However, we cannot go any further in our plans without the help of the architecture community. It would help us enormously if you could take 60 seconds to send an email me with your thoughts on the idea (or call me on +44 (0)771 7222 616), particularly:
1. Your initial thoughts/ideas/concerns
2. How many old architectural drawings requiring redrawing in CAD does your company have in a year? (also, how many architects are employed by your company?)
3. How is such work currently done in your office?
4. At a rate of, for example $3 per hour, what sort of cost savings might this represent to you (%)?
5. What sort of turnaround times do you require on such work?
6. How much training would our operatives require? How might we best go about training our operatives.
We rely on people like you to help us develop as an organisation, so, if you can, please email me at edward AT digitaldividedata.com or call me on 0771 7222 616. Thank you for helping!
With kind regards,
Edward McLean
