I was wondering if anyone had a view/information on water based living structures for residential or tourism applications. I am trying to understand if demand for novel water based (live/work/play) structures will come from residential housing needs or more likely from commercial users for office, tourism, leisure type applications. Also, if certain countries or regions will be more receptive to the adoption of `floating style` structures. I know for example, that Holland is pioneering work in this area, but would be grateful for any information on other countries/regions that are exploring `on water` solutions or architectural practices that have expertise in this area of work.
It's a fascinating topic and hope someone can help

| Funny you should post about this. Ive been looking at developing an etirely simple "kit" - which can be safely connected together with already existing, proven technology. They are to be 40' x 40' and the bases will support some 500,000lbs safely (and upto 670,000 lbs) the structures will float. Each 40' x 40' base should cost around $115,000 shipped anywhere in the world. Not too shabby, a little pricey, but im sure if you were looking for multiple units the price would come down, same with if you were looking to stay rather local (rather then shipping around the world) You would be talking about $5,000 rather then $20,000 which drops it right there to just $100,000 per unit.

i would look at anywhere that is on water and land is going at a premium rate...such as holland or say san francisco...
those are the places where you are going to see and have the most need for development of water as a platform for building

I think it is not a question of a specific function, more a question of money and spatial needs. For example, on one end of the spectrum, there is now an experimental floating airport in Japan http://www.jsce-int.org/Publication/CivilEng/2000/realizing.pdf and the floating gardens of ancient Mexico City come to mind, on the other end there is a city of floating Sampans in Hong Kong, that only exists because the poor don't have enough money to buy a house on dry land.
Ofcourse ocean going oil rigs float.
Floating urban systems are not really that common aroud the world, they seem to be a fairly recent thing. Wherever tides or floods tend to occur people just build on stilts (south east asia).

| I am trying to understand why there seems to be a resistance to develop more live/work structures on water when the technology seems to already exist - it's just taking boat living to a different level. Of course, tidal/wave variables need to be fully resolved in a cost effective manner

You want float? 3d Honeycomb will float. Hollow like sheetmetal, float like a butterfly sting like a bee. The computer float too. Cad to Production will make computer float. You se, Romans cant float, too fat,
with 3D-H the bees will float. Bees make honeycomb, computer make float.
