I am doing a project on ancient chinese architecture, particularly on how the forbidden city was built. From what i understand they used mostly wood with no nails or glue to contruct many of the buildings. Could someone help me find information on how this city was built or more particularly on how it was done without glue or nails (and how it is still standing today?). thanks

Hi
Steel was a source that was rare and expensive, putting lumber together worked fine without steel or glue ,acturly a wooden "bolt" work better becaurse it have a bigger surface ,will not rust and you can slice the end place a vedge that will split the wood of the wooden bolt when it reach the bottom of the hole drilled for it, and you will never be able to remove it.
Guess you must deal with this aspect, in boats and shipabuilding wooden plugs hold better than steel ones the steel nails and bolts is alway's what go first, leaving a ship with rust instead of nails and bolts , --- acturly the most common reson a boat is scrapped so please don't think that becaurse the material is stronger, that it is better . Anyway look at the tools they used, the individual specialised assembly technike for a corner for a mid piece aso. then you get the structure divided into specialised fields ,and you can be sure there was craftmen for this and craftmen for that piece of work.
Look at the graphic, --- no nails or glue a simple vedge make it force together forcing it apart, look again and you proberly find that they was much more advanced in the old day's. |
