Consider an earth-integrated design. As a starting point, I'd suggest you look at a book called Geo-Space Urban Design by Golany and Ojima. It contains an entire chapter about building on low, moderate, and steep slopes. Amazon.com has new and used copies of the book available for less than $20. If you're planning to build a house, there are a number of good resources available. Start by visiting architect Malcolm Wells' web site at http://malcolmwells.com.

sparq - Consult an architect. Designing on a slope is nothing difficult. It only requires planning, thought and a thick wallet.

If you haven't already, obtain a boundary and topo from a local surveyor or civil engineer. On residential projects where the slope is greater than 10%, we usually recommend the preparation of a grading plan. All commercial projects should include grading plans.

The Basics:
To keep costs down, try to keep the longest linear dimension parallel with the topography. The dimension of the structure that is perpendicular to the topography should be minimized.

The location of the drive access may be predetermined if the street is sloping across the front of the property. This will dictate the placement of site elements.

I assume you are designing a house. There are several other considerations beyond what can be covered in this forum. You should consult a professional.
