Dear all, Very Happy

I am a newcomer. I have a couple of questions, maybe big questions about urban planning education.
In my homecity- Danang, Vietnam, there are some enthusiasts who want to build a good university . It will be a non-profit university. One of them is my uncle. He asks me how to organize an Architectural and Urban Planning Department. What is the good model of this type of department? What kind of the curriculum should be use? How can we develop international relation between the department and oversea universities?
I don’t know how to answer him. Because all I know are:
1) Architectural and urban planning education are so separated in the U.S
2) In the U.S there are seems no Department of architecture and urban planning, only school or college of architecture and urban planning.

Please help me with these questions.
Thank much.

Hello -

Yes, there is a gulf between the Architecture and Urban Planning Departments in the US. There are some universities with joint programs (Univ. of IL, Cornell - and a few others), but many require you to do both degrees at the same time (what I am trying to do).

You may wish to visit the The Town Paper article on the Windsor Forum at:

http://tndtownpaper.com/Volume6/windsor_forum.htm

The Windsor Forum was a meeting held a few years ago by some of the leading name in sustainable architecture and planning - and the topic was just that - looking at the education of architecture and urban planners. You can obtain a copy of the doc on at that site as well.

I know how hard it is when trying to get architecture and urban planning degree at the same time.

Good luck!
