| I was wondering the other day, well, more like talking to someone about architecture, and they told me that architecture is the same prestige as doctors and lawyers, is this true? I dont know how else to better explain this, but you have medical school and law school, is architecture school and the whole profession just as prestigous as the first two? What are the thoughts on this? Thanks! |

| I don't know which is the most prestigous profession,but I am sure that other profession can't give me the satisfaction from the creation of somethin new, unique and beautiful. Do you agree that the other professions are more like handicrafts but the architecture is art. |

Hi
I find it a real problem seing architecture as rather art then crafts.
Now wouldn't you think it would be better to live in a house where the architect made the detail with hands-on experience rather than as how it did show back in the 60' and 70' ,that you would be charged if you put up curtains in another color than what the architect decided ? |

| At one time it may have been as prestigious. Probably about the time when doctors were using leaches to draw blood and architects were inventing the arch. The science of medicine has expanded to many different realms of research and bio-chemistry. We still are using the arch. Architecture is a nostalgic profession, still noble, but stuck in the dark ages as compared to other industries. |

With respect to the question, regarding the prestige of architecture, I think it all depends on what the yardstick is for measuring prestige and who is doing the measuring.
In Canada architecture doesn’t seem to have the same respect/fear as some of the other professions, i.e. if I don’t have a doctor, I’m certain to die of “whatever” or if I don’t hire a lawyer, I’m certain to be taken advantage of. Architecture doesn’t seem to instill the same degree of fear as some of the other professions and hence is not deemed to be as valuable of a profession (this is my own opinion). Similarly, Architecture doesn’t seem to be deemed an essential part of our lives, even though it is – this could mean good architecture or bad architecture.
Long story short, Larger then life architecture and architects are prestigious, the average architect is not prestigious accept for the filtering down from the larger then life architects. |

i think the most interesting part is how everyone has left off the tradition third profession of clergy... is this evident of recent attitude changes regarding problems within many faiths?
the way i see it as was stated earlier...maybe medicine and law have taken a much bigger part in our lives than it used to be... but look at it this way... there are far far more doctors and lawyers out there than there has ever been before... they are a dime a dozen
even though architects rarely make as much money as lawyers or doctors i think they garner far more respect than the other two professions... maybe this is b/c you don't necessarily meet an architect as often as you meet a doctor or lawyer...
here at school people who say their majors are pre-law or pre-med usually get the response "i hope you like going to school for 8 years" or even "isn't everyone?"
where as when you tell someone you are in architecture there is usually more awe connected to it than the other 2
personally i think doctors and lawyers are only given repsect today b/c of the size of their wallets... architects get respect b/c people know they have a very wide breadthe of knowledge... the waters may not be as deep as some doctors or lawyers speacialties but the waters are certainly much much wider and influece far more parts of our culture and society |

| bollox. this is purely architects pampering their ego's. who cares anyway? no one does architecture to be viewed in a certain way by society. Maybe in america lawyers and doctors are comparable, but medicine is still a highly respectable career choice here. Lawyers are just overpaid traffic wardens in my book and the amount of ally mcbeal wannabeas going through university at the moment and the rise of litigation culture in the UK is quite depressing. It is interesting that law is the only prof. where the regulating body is also the members club... architecture has RIBA and the ARB for example but lawyers just have the law society. I think i'm right in saying they're also the only ones who don't have a lay majority too. |
