I recently discussed habitable bridges and got a few good responses. I still have not been able to find an an analysis which addresses the economics. In other words " Can the rents support the ongoing costs to maintain the bridge?"

maintaining the bridge ? you have to build it first.

it needs the same kind of analysis as any other sort of development. One of the "unknowns" is whether the higher than normal construction costs would be offset by effectively having free land. This should be the case because the city authorities should see the bridge as a gain and therefore might be persuaded not only to allow it to be built without any form of charge for the location but actually to contribute to it because of its asset value as a new thoroughfare.

first calculation is what it would cost to build.

interesting problem.

Hi

Costs will be a serious part of it but as all newbuild it will requier an service plane, a plan about when ,what and how to maintain the structure ,seem to be one of those must, that E.U. will bang ontop designers heads among the claim for digital drawings fit for the codes that will be the end of it. Also the only bridge I contribuated suggestion about, is a specialy designed combined parking and road deck floatbridge ,as the maintainment and costs with a ships hull converted into float bridge, proberly will show an account that will be much more easy to follow, repairs that can be done at a shipyard ,this and that much a year already projected at the start.
Now maby a bargebridge is not the right solution just everywhere, but the concept promise a most flexible option ,where a number of individual barges could be automated as a subway --- realy today these things work and already 15 years ago a ferry could travel england-france without anyone at the wheel, all done automatic and by satelite navigation a bargebridge could sail away and opne for passing ships traffic and when done automaticly find it's way back and open , ------ combining this placing flats within the bargebridge structure is an exiting option and would make the floatbridge into a very attractive place to live, maby somone even pay . Anyway please check my arguments about a floatbridge, as this concept instead of spending a lot of steel to hold the road deck in the air, solve the problem in a very simpler and less expensive way , a ships hull is a relative cheap construction towerds a tradisional bridge construction, and offer you to establish the bridge as a number of prams in a row.
Please check ;

Hi

I find it very interesting that such an old idear is put forth as if nothing realy happened even out technology offer a hell of way's to maneage it better nicer and stronger. Combining the need for some bridge offering the volumes this could provide with just a different view about bridges would bring some realy fantastic options when involving a relevant technology to make it work. Guess the old on-build bridges was involved in a process where today we expect to project a bridge, and then nothing will be changed about that, but I do not expect things will ever reverse into what we know of bridges carrying an intire town, still cruise ships do sell floating flats and this thing been here before, so maby it just ask somone who can draw. ------ Still without a new form language it will just be the old re-invented.
