hey del,

there aren't many well-known examples of well-designed automobile assembly plants, however I remember a few from from my studies. Albert Kahn, a naturalized American architect produced many buildings for various automobile companies, such as GM and Ford, at the beginning of the 20th century. His designs are intruiging as they address the then-forthcoming reality of our automobilized nation, as well as the many pertinent architectural issues during the Modern movement. In fact, I believe that the period during which Albert Kahn worked, the early-to-mid 1900s, is an ideal span to investigate, as so many new technologies were emerging and designs were thoughtfully and appropriately put to use for their facilities.

Try looking him up, and good luck on your thesis.

p.s.

here is a brief bio of Albert Kahn : http://info.detnews.com/history/story/index.cfm?id=144&category=people

also, try looking up the AEG Turbine Factory, by Peter Behrens in Berlin, 1908-1909, ("AEG Turbinenfabriken") (this is not an automobile factory, but it is a factory nonetheless and deals with many of the same design issues.)
