This is no panacea, not even close, but sometimes every bit helps, in an economy like this, so...

I'd like to invite everyone to consider using a couple of modest promotional opportunities we provide for free.

1) Help Wanted and Employment Wanted ads in the ArchWeek jobs board here at DC:

This is a sleepy area that still has a long to go to gather a critical mass of participation. But by using it you'd help out DesignCommunity, you'd create another point where people can find you, and, if you link to your own pages, provide your pages with one more increment of search value.

2) Firm and/or Personal listing at Archiplanet:
http://www.archiplanet.org/wiki/Add_A_Page

Archiplanet is going strong, with US traffic (shown by Compete rank) higher than DesignCommunity or Archinect.com, and close to ArchitectureWeek overall. Over a million home page views, for instance.

Firm and personal listings are free and open to any level of A/E/C professional or service provider.

Once a personal or firm listing is in at Archiplanet, which is the main thing and can be done at a basic level in five minutes, it can also be enhanced substantially by entering project pages, as detailed in this tutorial article:
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/1107/tools_1-1.html

The project pages connect with the places pages in Archiplanet, so there can be some real local weight in the findability there - an unusual combination of some of the site visibility of a worldwide wiki, with some of the local connectedness of a home-town directory.

Just on that localism level, Eric Canal is an example of a user who has been documenting the great historical structures of his town Duanesburg, New York, like this, for an arbitrary example...

That kind of deep topophilia makes a valuable, rich set of local pages which can in turn help cross-connect local lay people interested in design and building to local design and building service providers.

Participating in these sites is never going to be a one-step solution to landing more work. But it can be of some value in incrementally adding to your exposure, with no cost other than a bit of time to put stuff in.

Sometimes every bit helps!
