You're with a friend, and you want to drive by by one of the homes you designed, just to show off your work. But they converted the neighborhood where it was built into a Gated Community. Now you can't get in without an appointment. Like you don't rate. How insulting.

And someone blocks that view by putting a house in the extreme corner of their property next door. Ouch!

What happens when there is an emergency in the gated community? Do the ambulance drivers have the codes to open the door, same with fire and police? Class segregation I guess it is all about the market... 'Location, location, location' On the lake view... does that community have a common ground / access policy to the prime parcel? The gate was only a wooden arm painted with orange and white stripes. The fire truck snapped it like a toothpick. Th best lake view goes to the highest bidder, of couse. Unfortunately, house #1's value went down a little because of house #2. Then house #2's value went down because of house #3. I wonder if the owner of house #1 sold it, and built #3 for spite? Ha ha ha. Gotta love them "Gaters"!

I think some people feel more secure behind a gate it isn't about class discrimination. Almost all subdivisions are designed to discriminate against class regardless of whether or not they have a gate. Simply keeping an endless stream of tourist (lookers) from driving buy may be one benefit. No I do not feel insulted, I think people have a right to privacy. I think about anyone I have ever designed for would invite me over if I wanted to see the finished product. I don't want to give the impression that segregation is acceptable though. I think it is a bad thing. If I had my way subdivisions would have to include provisions for all income levels.
