i have been told to look into nested spatial zones which can enhance the experience of crossing the threshold ? i can think of spaces within spaces and japanese architecture comes to mind....any other precedents/suggestions for nested spatial zones?

I think any good architecture should have what you called 'nested special zones/ spaces and not only exclusively to just of japanese.
Having said that, most obvious and literal could be seen in building that has to do with ritual and religions. Therefore you're probably right when what came to your mind was japanese architecture.
I think contemporary architecture 'nested spatial spaces' are more abstract and intriguing.
