Hi!
I'm a 3rd year student @ UBC (Vancouver, Canada). I'm actually a psychology major, but I've been thinking about what to do after getting my BA and looking at different options. A friend recently suggested to me about doing a master's in architecture.
I've always been interested in it since I was young, and I believe I still am. It's just that I did not even think about pursuing this option for university because I had (and a few others I talked to) always assumed that I would need to be excellent at physics and math, and have good drawing/creative abilities. I was recently told that this was not the case?
I got A's for physics and math back in high school, though I haven't taken any such courses since I began university. I think I'm comfortable with doing it, and I could probably "survive" it if I had to and if I tried. Drawing-wise I'm not the most talented person, I think I'm around average in terms of skills.
I've looked into the UBC's school of architecture, and in the admissions area, it said I would need a portfolio. What should I put in it? Sketches? Pictures? And for references, is it preferable that I have references that are architecture-related? I actually don't have any experiences right now and I'm not sure how to get that experience...
Sorry, I'm still so new at considering this that I really haven't looked at all the information that's available yet. I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction (say websites or anything), or have some suggestions for me, whether this might be a good path to take after my BA?
Thanks! |

What is your vocation?
If you know it, complete your education, trying to be somthing that you are not will make you miserable.
Good luck |

Does anyone have any advice on what to do for a portfolio? I feel so clueless...
I have very limited experience with AutoCAD so I don't think I should attempt to do any computer-generated images...
For a portfolio, is it ok to use sketches, drawings, paintings, photographs? Basically things hand-drawn? I'm thinking of putting in photos of interesting architecture buildings/designs, maybe a blurb of why that particular something interests me? I'm also thinking of putting in sketches of buildings, rooms, parks and the like. Probably a mixture of pencil and pen/ink drawings.
Any suggestions? Thanks! |

You may want to search on this site for portfolio.
I've read (I think here) that you may want to keep it simple and don't over do it.
My advice would be pick your fav's the ones you are passionate about, hand or cad.
Get the basics in Autocad you will need it.
May want to download for free the google sketchup can import your existing stuff.
I would suggest making at least 1 CAD sample in your portfolio.
Maybe pick one of your existing items (sketch/painting/pics) and doing it also in cad. Does not need to be amazing but to show you have no problem learning esp. new fancy pants programs
There are even programs that will convert your "picture" to 3D in digital format for cad use But start with 2D for now, till y'a get the basics.
Good luck,
