Our company is looking for a detailed and authoritative defintion of concept design. Where can one find one? I have looked on the web but to no avail, searched for books but have not found anything.

Is there a book reference or an institution one can contact?

Thanks

Coceptual Design Philosophy"

Every body has one, every client we interview he/she/them/its thing to know what he/she/them/its need, want, can afford, etc. etc.

The architect and his clarivoyant team of consultants will annalize and comeback with a preliminary concept design or presentation.

The process has began, and few more preliminary presentations will determine what the client needs, can afford, and he/she/them/its like it, it's aestetically pleasant and the city-county officials concur.

amen, have a happy and prosperous 2009

Concept designers such as Archigram are a good place to look but as far as a book or essay solely about Concept design I dont know. Conceptual art conjours up images of artists in the 60's struggling with the typewriter to find ways of putting ideas into practice usualy involving useing other people to create minimalist instalations.

If you're talking about defining the scope / remuneration for a particular stage of work, this one called 'concept design', here in Britain we have a book published by the RIBA defining the ingredients required of each stage of the design process. The RIBA Architect's Job Book describes the scope of 'Appraisal and Strategic Briefing' followed by 'Outline Proposals' followed by 'Detailed Proposals' and so on - no mention of the term 'Concept Design'. Wouldn't it be best to ask your client exactly what he/she is expecting to get?

It seems whoever posted this missed this one - there was also a discussion in these forums some time ago on this topic:

Concept' in Architecture

Perhaps a few ideas on this subject can be gathered by browsing around those pages as well.
