I have the basics going on, gre, gpa, cirriculum vitae...But maybe someone can shed some light on the real wow factor that will put my foot in the door. Im coming from an art history background+construction small business. I can include photos from rehabs and jobs Ive done of buildings, but I dont have all too much for personal art. But I do have a lot of art crit background. Is an essay appropriate?

I have no direct experience with MArch portfolios, but I have participated in the selection of BArch applicants and all I can tell you is that it's not cut and dry.

Art criticism is certainly valid. A series of full essays my be a bit much to digest, but perhps a compilation of key passages reformatted in a creative way would be intriguing.

Have you spoken to any of the school's architecture advisors? Outreach should be part of their job. Just because the schools tend to be inundated with more applicants than they can accomodate, it doesn't stop them from working to ensure that they get the best and the brightest to look at their schools and they want to help.

Trees, have more rendered trees in your drawings.

This is from direct experience. Cool bird houses will work too.

The Star Wars/George Jetson/Cartoon stuff isn't flying lately.

I'm somewhat in the same boat, My schools architecture advisor pretty much told me that the main thing is to "exhibit your creativity" soo i was definitely going to attemp some painting.. think thats good? He seemed to like the idea anyways...

Thanks for your replies, I didn't get an em notice about it like I normally do for some reason.

Yes, teamjdc, there is an open house in October that Im going to attend. Ill be able to talk to professors and kind of ask whats the 'run of the mill' vs 'wow'. Ive been thinking of treating the whole portfolio a bit thematically, based on my senior independent research , something along the lines of modernity, architecture, public and private treatment of space....but I dont want to cut myself short and not be able to express the very practical side of my experience. I like more and more the idea of some key passages creatively assembled in the pile.

Trees, eh? lol. I seem to remember doing a tree painting for my Larch portfolio maybe 9 years ago as a freshman undergrad (before I realized I wanted art history). AND I GOT IN! so you maybe on to something. Very Happy

starkca3, Im also going to use a painting of mine, and maybe go in on an installation show with a friend to get some more creativity in the work. I just dont have the kind of work that the studio art majors or barch came out with so I hear ya on that. good luck, where are you applying?

Trees and birdhouses, I know for sure, but maybe a cool muskrat lodge or something, or adaptive remodel of Falling Water. What would you demo? what would you keep. I like a trout pond on the deck, a small fish hatchery perhaps. Now I'm guessing.

Good luck starckca3!

Im loving a muskrat lodge, maybe with integrated frog lofts. I wonder how that model would look in photographs...

but seriously, I just remembered I made a pretty nifty backyard rainbarrel with all recycled/free materials, just the hose barb and filtration basket were purchased. I wonder if that's too corny or simple for a portfolio??

It's break a leg! Seriously think outside the box you are designing. Impact is everything, ask the dinosaurs.
