What's going on with this update process? I thought the last one was a fluke, but now here's another one just like it. I started to ask if ES was taking lessons from Microsoft, but actually Microsoft updates are very smooth.
Other than Powercadd, the most awkward software to update that I have requires deleting the old version and dragging the new version to the applications folder. Most applications check for updates automatically and when there is one, I get a dialogue box telling me there's an update and do I want to install it. I click 'OK' and that's it, the software installs itself. I may get requests for the password if it needs to install drivers, but that's it.
Why are we having to go through this convoluted process? Can't we catch up with the rest of the good Mac apps?

Why not using Sparkle ?
It is a framework that has been created for that purpose, it is free, a donationware more exactly, and quite a lot of softwares are using it and it works absolutely well.
Hundreds apps following their website. Softwares like Cyberduck, Pixelmator, VectorDesigner, ForkLift, BetterZip, Tables, iMedia Browser, NetNewsWire, RapidWeaver, Skim, Rhinoceros 4, Gizmo5, Camino ... |

Ever since getting Adobe's CS3, their updaters fail for me every time. It says there are updates, it downloads something, and then says the update failed. Gee, that's slick. At least I've been able to download and manually install updates. They at least provide that safety net.

I've had problems like that with MS Office 2008 (what a piece of crap), although not with Adobe. The problem with Office is that the updater won't work through many web caching proxies, and we use Squid at our office. It would be trivial to add the ability for the updater to bypass the proxy settings, but for whatever reason they haven't done it. Windows users have the same problem with Office 2007. I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe's updater has similar limitations.
As for PowerCADD, all I can guess is that they're trying to prevent piracy. Once the patching process is completed, the software can be copied to other computers and it will run fine, so long as you plug in a valid serial number. If they wanted to, Engineered Software could simply make the fully patched application downloadable, and simply replacing the older version of the app in the Finder will work. I imagine they don't do that in an attempt to keep the software out of the hands of anyone who doesn't legitimately own it. After all, if you don't have the software, a pirated serial number won't do you any good. Without the software you can't very well crack it to find the serial number either.
Just my personal opinion, of course. |
