the other day a few of us were talking about exspanding the librarys we use in powercad
already we have various hatchings used in wall's for insulation, stud's etc
also various windows dawn in plan and elevations as well as many standard details of sections through doors, windows walls etc which are handy as they are easly modified to suit the job at hand
what we were wondering is what others have in there library's to speed up drawing's etc |

for some reason (it might be due to the lack of screen space prior to getting my 30" monitor), I haven't used libraries too much. Instead, I have a couple of PowerCADD files that I have pasted commonly used items into. When I need something, I just copy and paste it, which I have found quite fast. Maybe I should create libraries of these items to see it makes it even easier to insert items...

You asked what we have.
Like Patrick I have some things like furniture in a regular file. That way I can make new versions in that file and have them later for other projects.
Besides the obvious, electrical symbols, landscape objects, I have libraries of objects for structural plans and details. The details (sections) libraries includes fasteners and common notes, but also objects that can be used in patterning materials in section, like plywood.
I find it faster to make short list libraries, for example of all orientations and types of 110v receptacle symbols (with the symbol palette) rather than use the big libraries all the time, or rotate all objects on insertion.

We use libraries in catagroies. Plumbing fixtures is one set. I've taken and scanned various whirlpool tubs, pedistal sinks and spas that we've been asked by clients to use in their bathrooms as an accurate way of making sure it all fits. Over time we've built up a representative collection of pedistal sinks, grab bars etc that we can use again.
Window heads and sills detail sections are another group of items that we find useful. I don't know why anyone would want to have a library of window elevations, they are so generic. But heads and sills are what have to be really detailed. I have taken manufaturer's files and combined their outlines into filled objects of extrusions that are clearer for me when placing in a detail. It is time consuming when a new frame type we don't normally use is encountered...like vinyl windows.
For elevations we depend upon purchased set of objects of people and vehicals. I wish we had more trees to choose from...perhaps someone has already developed those.

I have never seen the advantage of libraries over a simple folder of files of objects.
am I missing something, or is just "what you're used to"? |

agreed to some extent.
I find libraries most useful for
placement of electrical / mechanical symbols
landscape symbols
objects designed for use in patterning tools
objects that benefit from the flip and rotate insertion aids.
The limitations of the library's use is no excuse for the lack of improvement or the lack of decent libraries (even for sale) from ES when every other program ships with a good library base. Bundled libraries are not so much use to experienced users as for those considering purchasing PC for the first time.

The ability to designate the insertion point as well as mirror and rotate on the fly at the time of insertion are key factors over copy and paste. The latter can take two or three operations to get the same results.
I have many specialized small libraries, not one big one.

I have posted libraries I have realized. The site is far to be finished, but it can give you an idea already of libraries i made. I am working on them for a long time already and it takes times to make them.
I will complete it as soon as I can with really more others i already made.
Some are free, others are not.

That's a great idea and a good start to a more commercial addition to the Bullpen files. The more resources for PowerCADD the better.
Your site does some strange things to my Firefox when I try to get to the Hatches.
Aside: I was wondering the other day if others have started using Simpson Strongtie site for their connector library. I have the alphabetical listing bookmarked and in a few steps can open the .dwg for any of their products and paste in scale to my details. I have not bothered to library them for awhile. You have to get your download process in order, because you will want to throw out the copies eventually.

I started downloading the Simpson DWG files on an as needed basis a couple of months ago. (So far, when drawing a detail, if I need a piece of hardware, I go to Simpson's site to get a better drawing of it than my previous generic hardware drawings.) I have about 40 pieces of hardware imported into PowerCADD. I find it pretty simple to download/import then modify to my particular drafting style. I just emailed it to the Bullpen Library, so it might be available for download soon.

Can you describe me what happens ?
The interface of the site is not very beautiful yet, I wanted to get something that works first. Drawing the libraries is taking me a huge time on my free time, so there is not all of them yet, i hope to be able to release some more and more as often as i can. |
