Architecture can be compared to perfume. A perfume comes out as product of aesthetic and with it comes the lotion, soap, after shave and powder. Architecture is the end and furniture is what the lotion is to the perfume. A byproduct of the creation.

One could argue the opposite.

Why do rooms typically have square corners?
What dictates window sill height in an office?
How about bar height?

This is an offshoot of the form & function debate.

If it is true that the general character of a room depends on the architectural forms and lines which compose its walls, ceiling, doors, and windows, it is no less true that the expression of the same room largely depends of the manner in which it is furnished.

Who said it and when?

Since we've had such tremendous response to the quiz, I am going to give you all an F.
The answer is A.J. Downing but it was a trick question. Embarassed Even if you guessed or you're a real architectural history buff, you still only get partial credit.
Downing died in 1852 at the tender age of 36.
Wow. Very Happy
