im going into the architecture faculty in may..
im planning to learn some graphics softwares before i go into the faculty.
i have familiarised myself with photoshop ..
which software should i learn next? illustrator or AutoCAD??

or izzit a waste of time to learn such softwares at such an early stage?
or izzit a better idea to learn some other software?

will be really thankful if anyone in the architecture industry can enlighten me on this..

Well, speaking personally, I survived six years of college without learning Illustrator. But I am belatedly learning it now - there are some limitations to laying out everything in Photoshop or Powerpoint!!

CAD can be useful further into the course and I'm quite sure will be a valued skill when you try and get work experience/a job. Though if universities where you are are anything like they are here, you will probably be crucified if you turn up on day one expecting to draw everyhting on the computer. They will probably/hopefully want you to start with a pencil or pen!

I suppose my conclusion is that you would probably benefit more from aquainting yourself with Illustrator, if you have access to it.

I agree with lekizz that nothing can replace having facility with pencil and paper since this will strengthen your ability to think three-dimensionally.

That being said, CAD will be infinitely more useful to you as an architect than Illustrator. You may even consider BIM and solid modelling programs like Revit and Sketch-up as these are helpful design tools early in the process.

Illustrator's a definite for layouts, and CAD/CAM is always useful, and the best thing you could do would be to start learning BIM software like Revit. But conventionally, CAD would be most helpful, because it allows you to easily pick up programs like Rhino, FormZ, Maya, and Sketchup, which all model and render. That being said, after you learn CAD, you should get used to Illustrator so that you can present drawings at their best.
